                                          OUR THOUGHTS ON....

In this section our investigators will give their thoughts on different tools, experiments and happenings in the paranormal field. Our thoughts on these things are from our own personal experiences and beliefs. Enjoy!

By Michael Lane

The Bible is a very complex book. My belief is that it has all we need to know on how to live our life……but does it say anything about ghosts? One thing is for sure, this topic is very controversial when it comes to Christians. On many occasions our team (Supernatural Research Society) has spoken with Christian people that have claimed to see ghost, apparitions, etc.

Almost every culture has had a ghost story. Stories of ghosts seem to date back to the earliest time of recorded history. The middle ages brought forth the concept that ghosts were earth bound spirits of the departed. They believed that they were trapped here on earth. The Bible doesn’t seem to support this notion.

Many Parapsychologists believe that psychokinetic manifestations of our own subconscious can create what may be perceived as a ghost or poltergeist. Some theories point to horrific, emotionally intense events that may have somehow been recorded.  These events seem to repeat again and again.

What we need is a real ghost to appear and be willing to subject it’s self to testing. This is wishful thinking. I know it will never happen, but it would be nice.

Many Christians believe that paranormal investigating or anything to do with ghosts is wrong. They associate it with the occult or the devil. In Deuteronomy 18:9-12 the Bible says “when thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.

10 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.

11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.

12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”

Many Christians associate ghosts with witchcraft, wizardry and psychic mediums. This is why ghosts get a bad reputation when it comes to the bible.

I personally believe that the occult and Satan worship can be directly tied to evil or demonic spirits. Associating with this type of belief can also put you in a bind and bring bad things into your life such as demonic oppression and possession. I do not believe that all ghosts fall into that category. I have witnessed and investigated many cases in which the ghostly activity was in no way linked to the occult or satan worship.

The Bible mentions ghosts/spirits many times. I will give you some of the verses in which it specifically mentions them.

In Matthew 14:25-27 the Bible says “25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”

So why would the Bible mention a spirit if they did not exist?

In Mark 6:48-50 the Bible says “48 And He saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night He cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

49 But when they saw Him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out:

50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.”

Again it very clearly mentions the word spirit….

In Luke 24:36-38 the Bible says “36 and as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

38 And He said unto them, Why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

Do you notice that each time that they believe they see a spirit, they are frightened? It looks as if the general belief back then was that ghosts were scary.

In Luke 24:38-40 the Bible says “And He said unto them, Why are ye troubled? And why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

40 And when He had thus spoken, He shewed them His hands and His feet.”

Now, this was Jesus speaking of a spirit Himself, to me, He would not speak of a spirit unless it was a real thing. Christ could have easily said that there was no such thing as spirits, if that were the case.

In 1 Peter 3:18-19  the Bible says “18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

Does this mean that even spirits are still able to adhere to Gods word?

In 1 John 4:1 the Bible says “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

This verse suggests that more than one type of spirit exist and that we should “try” them to figure out if they are of God or not.

In Matthew 12:43 the Bible says “43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

Some believe that this verse insinuates that demons or unclean spirits may seek rest in water because they walk dry land and find no rest there. Some believe that since unclean spirits dwell in or around water, that other spirits would not go there or try to cross over water due to the evil ones being there.

Later on in  Matthew 12:44-45 the Bible says “44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Many believe this to mean that demons may return to a place or person and when they do they will bring with them seven more spirits, these being even more evil than the original. The Bible says that this would leave the man that they return to being in worse state than before.

In 1Samue28:7-20 the Bibles says “Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go to her and inquire of her.”

And his servants said to him, “In fact, there is a woman who is a medium at En Dor.”

So Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went, and two men with him; and they came to the woman by night. And he said, “Please conduct a séance for me, and bring up for me the one I shall name to you.”

Then the woman said to him, “Look, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off the mediums and the spiritists from the land. Why then do you lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?”

10 And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, “As the Lord lives, no punishment shall come upon you for this thing.”

11 Then the woman said, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”

And he said, “Bring up Samuel for me.”

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out with a loud voice. And the woman spoke to Saul, saying, “Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!”

13 And the king said to her, “Do not be afraid. What did you see?”

And the woman said to Saul, “I saw a spirit[a] ascending out of the earth.”

14 So he said to her, “What is his form?”

And she said, “An old man is coming up, and he is covered with a mantle.” And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and bowed down.

15 Now Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”

And Saul answered, “I am deeply distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and does not answer me anymore, neither by prophets nor by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may reveal to me what I should do.”

16 Then Samuel said: “So why do you ask me, seeing the Lord has departed from you and has become your enemy? 17 And the Lord has done for Himself[b] as He spoke by me. For the Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hand and given it to your neighbor, David. 18 Because you did not obey the voice of the Lord nor execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day. 19 Moreover the Lord will also deliver Israel with you into the hand of the Philistines. And tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also deliver the army of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.”

20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, and was dreadfully afraid because of the words of Samuel. And there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no food all day or all night.

As you can see when Saul went to the medium to have her call up a spirit, (an act which God forbid) nothing good came from it. It was actually very devastating to Saul.

After reading this I hope this helps you to see that ghost/spirits are mentioned in the Bible more than most people think. Does it solve the age old question of why they are here? No, but it does help us to know that even Gods written word has documented that in some way spirits do exist.

                               Day Investigations or Night Investigations?

by Michael Lane

Ask most paranormal investigators and they will tell you that they do their investigations in the dark. Even my team, Supernatural Research Society, does many of theirs in the dark.

My first theory on why is because of television. If you watch any paranormal themed show on TV you will see investigators walking around in pure darkness with only the viewfinder of their camcorder to help them see. What do a lot of investigators do when they see “famous” paranormal investigators on TV? Well to be truthful people see the “famous” paranormal teams on TV and they imitate what they see them doing.

Another theory of mine is that the dark just brings more curiosity and excitement to an investigation. How many times have you been in the dark and heard an unknown knock around the corner? Doesn’t it seem like the darkness just adds to the rush of excitement that runs through our body upon hearing something out of the ordinary?

To be perfectly clear this way of investigating has really nothing to do with TRUE scientific investigating. Sure the power off may shut out some of the EMF fields from interfering with your investigation-that is if you use EMF meters. (By the way EMF meters have never been proven to find ghost)

So does it really help to have the lights off for a paranormal investigation?

I’ll answer with a big fat NO! The darkness has no advantages to finding evidence whatsoever.

If you are truly using a scientific approach to your investigations then you should try and recreate the events that happened. How many times has a client said to you “I seen it in broad daylight” or how many times have they explained the things that happened during all times of the day….not just the night time. This is why we should be more open to doing daytime investigations. This way we can recreate more of the events that have happened.

If a dark shadow has been seen in the daytime floating around a house, then how in the pitch darkness of night are we to see a dark shadow?

Many knowledgeable paranormal investigators believe that ghosts are made up of energy and/or electromagnetic fields. They believe that spirits will use the energy of electronics and from the living. But why, if you believe this, would you shut down all power sources?

Did you know that conducting an investigation in total darkness will interfere with your perception? One of the most important senses we use is our sight. Our sight is not ideal for use in total darkness. When our eyes have to adjust then they lose some of their ability to do what they do best…..see. The darkness can cause us to misinterpret things with our eyes. In a dark setting we are essentially committing somewhat of a bias approach. When we eliminate the objective we often create a one-sided and subjective experience.

Did you know that light and sound are both created by waves? Our ears let us hear the sound waves and our eyes help us figure out where they may be coming from. Essentially the two work together. In this case we should put our senses to work under normal circumstances because that’s when they will work best for us. Otherwise we may be hearing one thing but looking in the wrong place.

Do not believe everything you see on TV when it comes to the paranormal field. Many of the ways that the “famous” guys do things are not the best ways at all. Don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting that we never do investigations at night. I am suggesting however that you look at the positives of daytime investigating. Next time your team is presented a chance to investigate why not try to start during the day and work into the night. You may be surprised on what you find. I know I was.

Electromagnetic Fields (EMF’s)

by Michael Lane

EMF’s…. What exactly are they and what is their place in paranormal investigating?

Electromagnetic fields have been a part of the paranormal field for a long time. Look in any Paranormal Investigators tool box and you will find an EMF meter.

So what exactly is an electromagnetic field?

EMF’s are invisible but physical fields that are made by objects that are electrically charged. If you have used anything with electricity then you have been around EMF’s.

Usually the more powerful or higher voltage that an electronic device has means that it will have a higher EMF.

Nature has its own sources of EMF’s as well. Take the Sun for example it gives off a huge array of EMF’s. The atmosphere is full of electrically charged particles that sometimes build up to cause what we know as thunder storms. When this happens Nature has made its own EMF’s. Humans give off their own EMF’s as well. The EMF’s that humans give off are not powerful enough to spike most EMF meters.

If EMF’s are everywhere, what part do they play in paranormal investigating?

There are a few different theories on how EMF’s and paranormal are linked together.

Theory 1

EMF’s can help find spirit activity.

Many investigators believe that during an investigation a sudden spike in EMF’s may be a sign of paranormal activity. When ghost/spirits manifest it’s believed that they gather their energy from surrounding energy sources such as electrical or battery powered objects.

By using energy from different things, that would give spirits/ghosts their own EMF’s. This would be the reason for spikes on an EMF meter during an investigation.

Of course for a reading to truly be considered paranormal it must be ruled out from being produced by any other source of existing EMF’s. This is why it’s extremely important to be very thorough while ruling out potential existing sources of EMF’s.

Many investigators will do a walkthrough of the property that is being investigated so that they can mark anything that gives off EMF’s. This is a very good way to start an investigation as it will help rule out false positives.

EMF spikes alone are not enough evidence to say that a place is haunted. However paired with other happenings such as seeing an apparition or objects being moved and even unknown voices may be enough to say what’s  happening is truly paranormal.

Theory 2

The next theory is also popular among many investigators. This theory states that high EMF’s are the cause of any perceived paranormal activity that may be taking place.

In other words high EMF’s are the cause of someone believing that something paranormal is taking place.

In several studies high EMF’s have been found to make people feel very uneasy. Many people when surrounded by high levels of EMF’s were overwhelmed with anxiety, paranoia and uncontrollable fear. People often mistake this for something paranormal going on. Some paranormal groups call this the fear cage factor.

Dr. Michael Persinger is a professor of Psychology at Laurentin University in Canada. Dr. Persinger has been able to back this theory up through several studies on this topic. You can read more about him and his studies online.

These two theories are the most common when dealing with the paranormal field. Other theories exist but many in the paranormal field believe that these two are the standard as far as EMF’s go.

THE GANZFELD EXPERIMENT: by Michael Lane - In one of our investigations I tried a new experiment (well, new for me) called The Ganzfeld Experiment. The Ganzfeld Experiment (Ganzfeld is a German word meaning "entire field") is a technique used in the parapsychology field. It is used to test individuals for extra-sensory perception(ESP).The experiment uses sensory stimulation to try and produce an effect that is the same as sensory deprivation.

This experiment was invented by Wolfgang Metzger in the 1930's. The Ganzfeld is done by putting someone (a receiver) in a quiet room. The receiver should get in a comfortable chair. The person should then place halved ping-pong balls over their eyes. Next a red light should be shone on the person. The receiver should also listen to white noise (static) while in this relaxed state. The receiver should stay like this for around a half hour or so. This will help the receiver to adjust to the environment.
Meanwhile a separate person called a "sender" is focused on a random target. The sender tries to mentally send information to the receiver. The receiver talks out loud and explains what they can see. This is recorded by third person or a voice recorder. If the sender and receiver match up then the experiment is a success. Many believe that doing the experiment at a so-called haunted place will allow both the sender and receiver to hear the voices of spirits or ghosts. They can relay what they hear to the third person to see if it matches up. If it is a match then it would be considered communication with the dead through the power of both minds working together.

Our team tried this and was caught off guard before we could even get fully set up. I was in a comfortable chair and had everything in place except for the white noise. As soon as one of my investigators started the white noise things went crazy. First our battery power was drained in two separate devices, our camcorder and our digital camera. We then felt a very noticeable drop in temperature, as well as cold chills all over my body. We finally got everything going with the experiment and I started having visions of a large pick-up truck. I have not been able to trace what the connection with the truck is...if any at all. My team and I then heard what sounded like knocking or something trying to communicate through the white noise.

In the end, I don't think that the Ganzfeld Experiment worked for us. We did get activity but could not prove that it was from the experiment. I would like to try it again but for now the jury is still out on The Ganzfeld Experiment.......

Debunking: by Cole Taylor - As we watch different shows such as Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, and even Ghost Adventures we notice that these guys are very good at debunking what is paranormal and what is everyday noise. A simple bang or a knock could be the heating unit cutting on, a pet knocking over something or even cracks and creeks that happen in the house.  Like most ghost hunting teams, the first objective is determine what is paranormal and what is not. It's important to pay attention to everyday sights and sounds to see what possibly could have made that knock you might have just heard  or that flash of light on the wall that just passed by. Ask yourself could that possibly have been a car or another investigator's flash light? Debunking is a very important quality to have when doing an investigation, so as an investigator of the paranormal I say take a moment to listen to your surroundings and use you knowledge to see if you can debunk what might be just a cat around the corner or if its actually paranormal...

My First Experience With Sleep Paralysis: by Michael Lane - I could feel that I was going to be sick. You know the feeling right?.......The way your body tells you that a cold is coming on. Well my body lets me know. I knew the next couple of days were going to be tough. I prepared myself with the weapon of night time cold and cough medicine. Normally this type of medicine makes me have weird dreams. This night it was weird dreams along with.......sleep paralysis???

Well it all started as I tossed and turned in the bed, covers on.....covers and sweaty then cold and shivering. When my wife finally decided to come to bed I decided to move to the couch so that she could get some sleep. As I fell asleep I was suddenly in a place I had never been before. This was bizarre......with what little light that beamed from the television screen; I could see the shape of a person out of the corner of my eye. It was scary to heart almost jumped out of my chest. My eyes were open and my brain knew I was awake but my body would not move. I panicked for what seemed like forever. In my mind I was telling myself to get up and see what it was. I fought as hard as I could but.......nothing, all I could do was lay there and stare at what I thought was a ghostly apparition.

Out of nowhere it hit me!!!!

I have been a paranormal investigator for years and on many occasions people have told me about this very same thing happening to them. I guess I was just too caught up in the moment to take notice. When I finally realized what I was experiencing I stopped trying to fight my way up. I just decided to close my eyes and relax..........the next morning it took me a while to remember what had happened.

Once it hit me I started telling everyone I knew.

Was this normal or paranormal??? My guess? Well a little of both.

It was a mind-boggling experience, one that I will always be able to relate to others which have had it as well. BUT I can honestly say that I hope it never happens again!
